So , my California audiobook publisher is just now listening to my early chapters of this weighty tome- there are SO many accents & characters I was a trifle anxious of his reaction, when this arrived …….

“A most necessary comment”

As I listened to your reading of Dracula’s speech beginning on page 26, I couldn’t help but feel like I was listening to one of the greatest audiobook performances ever recorded. I think we’re doing something here that will prove to be very significant.

Modest or what ! I asked him if was a clandestine motivational guru and he assures me not… so… head down, only 12 hours of reading to go !

My publisher at Cherry Hill in California has high hopes & wants to submit this for the “Audio awards”

In fact HG Wells lived in Shepperton and based this classic novel on the area around there- so the initial martian invasion was in Leatherhead, Woking etc. One of them landed in Sheen where we live now, 110 years later !

So I was 20, it was 1967, and I had a solo deal with Parlophone.

After leaving Stowe School- where the Beatles played that famous gig, my first job was plugger at Decca working for head of promotion Tony Hall. My producer, radio city deejay Phil Jay was floor manager at Granville TV on Fulham Broadway & London Line was a newsreel type show produced by the COI .

“This just doesn’t seem to be my day” was a cover from the Monkees first album. The B side was” She Wanders through My mind”

So the wind is whistling round the microphone a bit as the days shorten here on the edge of Richmond Park. Even the odd crack of a rifle can be heard in the night from the its leafy depths, as the annual cull keeps Henry V111′s herd down to a manageable 700.
The website has drawn a few intriguing hits since its summer launch- from India, Italy & most recently, Boston. It was from there that the illustrious crimewriter Joe Finder (www.JosephFinder.com) contacted me- as he wanted to get his accent honed for a local theatrical production he was asked to appear in. Did I have an eccentric 1920s headmaster in my repertoire ? And a slightly cockney police inspector? I did. It was a hoot & he claimed the evening was a great success.
Watch this space for the first chapter of my Indian friends who want me to read the script for an instructional CD for Pregnant Mothers. Ah. the contrasts of life from the voiceover booth.
